#funfactfriday sustainable agriculture in suburban and urban environments has been my secret passions for years now. it all started after learning about how much the way we grow or raise our food currently is rapidly destroying the earth and our health. 🌱✨ i used to believe that oh the reason we grow food the way we do is to ensure that the rising populations in the world has food to eat ( propaganda works !) but the more i studied and learned about the current farming model (which relies on monoculture, gmo seed, and chemical fertilizers and herbicides) i began to see that it is not helping with food security globally. 🌱✨ in fact, sustainable local small or mid-sized agriculture is capable of feeding the world and that our current model of mass agriculture is not a model that’s helping alleviate hunger in the world plus, it’s destroying the very earth that sustains us. 🌱✨ eventually, i got fed up just learning about our broken food system and chose to take small action and start to learn how to feed myself more local and sustainably grown produce. yes i now grow a large portion of the produce we eat in the high season but i still depend on local farmers who practice sustainable farming (i know i can’t and don’t want to grow everything i eat right now but 50% part of the year is huge for us). 🌱✨ if you are like me, but younger (13- 25 years old), fed up of just learning about our broken food system, and want to do something, check out in the link in my bio. i’ve partnered with @dosomething feeding better futures and the general mills feeding better futures scholars program. winners will receive $50,000 to take their food and sustainability initiatives to the next level. (deadline is on february 28th)#plantmagic 🌱✨ i’ll also be doing an ig take over @dosomething before the end of the month. i’ll keep you posted on my feed and stories when that will be. . . . . . . . . . . . . . #sustainablegardening #sustainableliving #sustainablefarming #sustainablelifestyle #modernfarmer #womenwhofarm #futurefarmer #ecofriendly #ecoliving #localvore #protecttheearth #changemaker #urbanfarming #sustainableagriculture #greenlife #growyourownfood #bgwb #beinggreenwhileblack

Today we’ll be posting quotes from “the current state of agricultural education,” a feature from our winter 2017 issue on sustainable ag programs at universities all over the country. overall agricultural enrollment at america’s 75 land-grant universities has remained relatively flat between 2004 and 2015, but the number of programs devoted to sustainable farming practices, or “agroecology,” has soared since the usda started tracking them in 1988. what began as a list of one b.s., at the university of maine, has evolved to include 256 programs, 97 of those leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. the field has even spawned its own professional organization, the sustainable agriculture education association. read the full article via the link in our bio. πŸ“·: @ucscfarm by @asdavidelliott

Tay miguel checks out the flowers of his mustasa. the older farmers of capas would tell us stories of how vegetables from their childhood would willingly self-seed. now, many varieties have been made to bloom very late or not at all - so this particular plant is a delight for them. crossing our fingers that this one plant is the start of the resurgence of more self seeding mustasa! ✊🏽 #foodsovereignty #goodfoodcommunity #seedsaving #sustainableagriculture

Look what happens when you aerate soil without tilling it! roots p*******e deep into the soil anyways! it’s amazing after one broadfork session how loose the soil can become. all the roots leftover in the soil will decompose and become humus, which is stable carbon that holds carbon in the soil for a very long time. we are carbon positive farmers, adding more carbon to the soil than taking away. like and comment on why you support regenerative agriculture!

We’ve almost finished showing you all the breeds of chickens in our flock! this lady is a black copper maran. marans come in many feather varieties, and this girl will lay beautiful, dark brown eggs. they’re great for breeding too. if you cross a maran like this with a rooster who carries a blue egg gene like an ameraucana, you’ll get a beautiful speckled green egg layer. our marans are our largest birds in our flock, and we think they’re adorable!

Have you ever wondered how baby carrots are produced? they used to be the result of peeling and cutting broken carrots that couldn’t be sold for aesthetic reasons. nowadays, this tradition has kept its main track but lost its natural qualities. in order for baby carrots to stay small in size, they are planted very close together, harvested just 120 days after planting, washed, peeled and dipped in a chlorine bath… otherwise, peeled vegetables would rot within 2 to 4 days. how can you make sure your foods are free of chemicals and synthetic pesticides? the first step is to choose organic foods produced with natural pesticides like neem! learn more about neem’s benefits for organic agriculture at www.neem.world!

A nourished kitchen is all about traditional #cooking - recipes that are reminiscent of our grandmother’s cooking. this collection of recipes honors the connection between the foods that we eat, their preparation, and where they come from. food blogger and educator jennifer mcgruther is an advocate for #farmfresh foods and #sustainableagriculture _ mcgruther’s blog, also titled the nourished kitchen, offers a community around different diets - gaps & scd, paleo & primal, gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, or vegan. she arranges recipes by season, too! -
while we’re still in the throes of winter, try out a roasted cabbage recipe. #cabbage is an abundant source of vitamin c. it is actually richer in vitamin c than oranges! _ ingredients * 1 head of cabbage, sliced into wedges * olive oil, for drizzling * salt and pepper to taste * lemon juice, for drizzling (optional) instructions 1. preheat your oven to 375 degrees. slice your cabbage into wedges. lay them on a baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil. salt and pepper your wedges to taste. bake the cabbage wedges for 20 to 30 minutes until tender and golden brown in spots (baking time will depend on the thickness of the wedges). serve immediately. (drizzling a little lemon juice right before serving takes this dish over the top!) - #preservedgoods #realfood #slowfood #nourishyourself #cookbookgram
