All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost. from the ashes, a fire shall be woken, a light from the shadows shall spring; renewed shall be blade that was broken, the crownless again shall be king. 👑

"ring of silvanus" or the -vyne ring-.
is an ancient cursed roman-britanic ring, that is the inspiration for j.r.r. tolkien's, lord of the rings. it was discovered by a farmer ploughing his field in 1785, near silchester, hampshire, england; which is a town of roman origin and a site for many archaeological finds. it dates roughly to the 4th century a.d. and is now on display at the vyne house in basingstoke, hampshire, england. it is presumed the farmer sold the ring to the chute family, who owned the home and had an interest in history and antiques. in 1888, chaloner chute wrote of the ring in his history of the home. the house is now part of the national trust.
in 1929, a british archeologist, sir mortimer wheeler, was excavating a roman site at lydney park; the temple of nodens,(a former celtic, rebuilt roman) when he discovered details of a curse on a lead tablet, known as defixio. it connected the ring, which had the name 'senicianus' and the curse tablet which bore the same name. the temple is approximately 130 kilometers from the vyne. -the inscription on the tablet is latin, translated it reads as-
for the god nodens. silvianus has lost a ring and has donated one half [its worth] to nodens. among those named senicianus permit no good health until it is returned to the temple of nodens
implying that senicianus stole the ring from silavianus, in return he cursed him until it was returned.
the gold ring is bigger than most of the era, 25mm in diameter & weighs 12 grams, band has 10 facets, set with a square bezel & engraved with the image of roman goddess venus. one side has "ve" inscribed, the other side has "nvs" in mirror writing. band is inscribed with the latin words "seniciane vivus iin de". which is misspelled, the double i and no o on the de. meaning "senicianus live in god".
wheeler contacted tolkien, a professor on anglo-saxon studies at oxford university, to help investigate the etymology of the name "nodens" mentioned in the curse. it is hypothesized that their discussions, also others pertaining to the lydney area which includes an iron age fort known as dwarf's hill, may have influenced tolkien's writing.
