Day 116 of my #200daysofpractice challenge ✨ today i had my lesson and i have many new assignments to work on this week. i will be learning the rest of the notes for bourrée, a little nugget in the two grenadiers along with playing twinkles in a minor with new bowing, choosing and preparing two old review pieces to choose from for my next recital - i am thinking of reviewing hunters chorus and long long ago from book 2 ✨
@chloetrevor_violin: okay soo.. i think my ac is fixed!! yaaas! and now it is pouring outside. and the highway is flooding 😬 and it’s supposed to continue raining all night 😭
day 15 of #100daysofprayer: heavenly father, i pray for the safety of all of those in the collin county and nearby areas. keep everyone safe on the roads - i know there have been many accidents already. thank you for allowing me and everyone i know to get home safely this evening. it was pretty frightening driving in the downpour. i pray for strength and energy to practice over the weekend because i know i’m going to want to rest and take a lot of time for myself. give me wisdom to make financial and some life changing decisions that are coming up soon. i pray for restorative rest for me and everyone i care about. thank you for the wonderful students at the region clinics i taught this evening - i pray that they will have learned something from the classes and that it will be helpful for them when they practice so they can have successful auditions in october. i pray for anyone who may not yet know you or have a relationship with you. i hope they can see that is it truly better one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere (psalm 84:10). i pray all these things in jesus’ name - amen❤️
So several of you ladies have been messaging me about this so i'll address it here: yes, i do my own gel nails, and i do keep them on during performances. i don't care how bright or sparkly they are.
i have encountered this stigma as a musician: if you have your nails and/or makeup done, it's obviously because you did this instead of practicing. you're clearly not a serious musician. unless of course you're famous. then you can do and wear whatever you want.
i've gotten this vibe over the years as a student and i've unfortunately been raised around this ridiculous mentality at home. and i really don't care for it. if i'm going to be judged, it should be because of my playing. if people are going to make assumptions about my playing based on how i look, well, that's their problem and i'm not going to change my appearances to accomodate that.
i practice for several hours a day, i have several part-time jobs, i gig, i do my homework. i think i can afford to set a few minutes aside to do my makeup.
and i don't think it's a distraction. if you're at an orchestra concert with 100 people on-stage and you're focusing on what one of the violist's fingernails look like, you're focusing on the wrong thing.
so to all of you: you do what you feel comfortable doing, whether that means getting all dolled up or not. focus on the music and the rest will fall in place.
