It is common to associate the word yoga with a system of physical postures and meditation. but yoga in its original form has a deep spiritual significance which is lost in today’s body-centered world.
the sanskrit* word yoga comes from the verb root yuj, which means to link or to connect. when we talk about linking or connection, an obvious question arises: to connect what with what? the ancient vedic† text bhagavad gita explains that these entities are the individual consciousness and the universal supreme consciousness.
yoga or divine union with the supreme does not mean that we merge into the supreme and become one with him. bhagavad gita explains that we do become one, but in quality and not in quantity. this oneness is spiritual, not physical. for example, the perfect realization of sugar is not becoming sugar, rather tasting its sweetness.
Lord rama and his army of monkeys were preparing for war with ravana.rama asked his army to build the bridge over the sea. the monkeys pulled out rocks and heavy stones from the mountains, and carried them to the sea.
one day, rama saw a small brown squirrel. he was going up and down the seashore with little pebbles in his mouth. the little squirrel could carry only little pebbles at a time in his small mouth. he carried the pebbles from the seashore and dropped them into the sea.
a great monkey was carrying a large heavy stone on his back and the squirrel came in his way.
the monkey jumped back.
“here, you little thing,” shouted the monkey in a voice like thunder, “you’re in my way, i stepped back and you’re alive now. but i nearly fell. and what are you doing here?”
the little squirrel looked up at the great monkey and said i’m helping rama build the bridge. and i want to work hard for him.”
the monkeys said, “don’t be foolish. do you think you can help rama? do you think we can build a bridge with pebbles? he has a big army to help him. go home and don’t get in our way.”
then rama held the squirrel close to him.he said to the monkeys, “do not make fun of the weak and the small.
your strength or what you do is not important. what matter is your love. this little squirrel has love in his heart.
“o vanaras, you are brave and strong, and are doing a wonderful job bringing all these huge boulders and stones from far and dropping them in the ocean.but did you notice that it is the tiny pebbles and stones brought by this small squirrel and some of the other smaller creatures which are filling the small gaps left between the huge stones?

regarding the child problem: i may inform you that all our children born of the krishna conscious parents, they are welcome and i want hundreds of children like that. because in future we expect to change the face of the whole world, because child is the father of man. anyway, i have seen malati is nursing her child so nicely that she attended my meeting every day and the child was playing and she never cried. similarly, lilavati’s child also never cries or disturbs the meeting. lilavati was always present with her child, so it depends on the mother. how to keep the child comfortable, so that it will not cry. the child cries only when it feels uncomfortable. the child’s comfort and discomfort depends on the mother’s attention. (letter to krsna devi — montreal 21 august, 1968)
children our future hope!
please also take care of the children. they are our future hopes, and the adolescent age is the most dangerous age. it is the turning point of one’s life. in this age, if you take care of the children, surely they will come out first class krishna conscious devotees. (excerpt from a letter written to hayagriva — london 7 november, 1969)

“sever the doubt in your heart with the sword of self knowledge. observe your discipline. arise.” (bhagavad gita 4:42)
with 9 avatars that have come down to earth to help guide mankind towards spiritual development, it is easy to fall into the expectation that vishnu will once again come down to correct the wrongs we see in society today. in the bhagavad gita, krishna promises:
“paritranaya sadhunam vinashaya cha dushkritam...”
meaning: to protect the virtuous, destroy the wicked, and to establish dharma (righteousness), i will come from time to time.
but god does not come to work for us. he comes to work with us. it would be foolish for us to sit tight, waiting for our “knight in shining armour” to ride in on his white horse, wielding his fiery sword, and rescue us from the evils of the world. when he is needed he will come, but not to save us, rather, to support those that are doing good.
