When a little day adventure turns into everything you imagined it being. 😍
just a 20-minute drive outside of mostar in bosnia and herzegovina is a tiny town called blagaj (pronounced “blah-guy”) where man-made so seamlessly coexists with nature that its hardly distinguishable structurally.
right at the base of a massive vertical cliff shielding the town is one of the largest and most beautiful springs in europe, with cold clean water feeding from a huge underground karstic cavern into the neretva river.
but perhaps just as impressive as the natural spring is blagaj tekke, the centuries-old monastery (at least as early as 1520 after the start of ottoman rule) built right into that cliffside, overlooking the water and tucked into the rocks as if it’s all one single entity.
swipe left to see more of the spring and idyllic little town. 🙌🏼 be sure to make a stop here for one of the most picturesque meals of your life along the water (trout is caught fresh in the spring so it’s a good option on any menu!).

Along with being surprised with how tasty the food is and how friendly the people are and how green the landscapes can get, i definitely didn’t realize bosnia was a home decor dream. 😍
i love that it feels like a combination of some of my favorite parts of the world — wood carvings reminiscent of india 🇮🇳, architecture that reminds me of morocco 🕌, mountains that look as epic as those of switzerland 🌄, copper vessels that looks just like those i picked up in abu dhabi ⚱️... and yet, it’s very much it’s own unique place, with a culture and history and governing system that’s an incredibly complex mix of darkness and beauty and progress.
touring some of the old ottoman homes here in mostar (like the famous muslibegovic and biscevic houses) is such a great way to get a glimpse into what life looked like hundreds of years ago for wealthier families, and to see the art and creativity central to bosnian culture.
personally, i would love to find a way to “copy & paste” everything about these places — the architecture, the rugs, the lamps, the silver, the ceramics, the gardens — into my future home. 🙌🏼 anyone else?
