photo by @amivitale . mary lengees comforts suyian, reteti elephant sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e )’s very first resident. suyian was rescued in september 2016, when she was just four weeks old. in the first days that an elephant arrives, keepers stay with the orphans around the clock to offer comfort and be sure that the calf gets all the medical attention and love he or she needs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
this is @amivitale and i’m excited to be taking over the @worldpressphoto account to share photos from my world press photo winning @natgeo project, “warriors who once feared elephants now protect them,” about reteti elephant sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e ) in northern kenya.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
reteti is the first ever community owned and run elephant sanctuary in all of africa. to see more of my work on this extraordinary place and learn how to become a part of the movement, follow @amivitale and @r.e.s.c.u.e

Happy world elephant day! elephants are among the world's most intelligent species. they grieve, they learn, they love, they use tools, they have compassion and are self-aware. over and over again, we have seen them embrace a new orphan, welcoming them into the reteti herd, and helping them adjust after the terrible trauma of being separated from their mother. today, on world elephant day, we celebrate their incredible, boundless love. we also renew our efforts to protect them.
join us by making a contribution to reteti today at prizeo.com/elephants. (link in profile.) you might even win a trip to visit the sanctuary yourself.
in this photo, reteti keeper mary lengees shares a moment with shaba. mary is one of the first samburu women elephant keepers in all of africa and shaba is the proxy matriarch for the reteti herd, loving and caring about all the others.

From @natgeo - film by @amivitale | happy world elephant day! feeding time at the reteti elephant sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e ). reteti's nutritionists prepare specially developed formula for the orphans which is then delivered to them wherever they may be - in the field or in the boma. feeding is a big part of the day’s work for the handlers and drinking is a noisy, slurpy affair. “before, i was afraid of wild animals, especially elephants,” says dorothy lowuekuduk, one of the nutritionists, “but now i see them differently. the sanctuary has changed my feelings about elephants.” the elephants are fed 2 liter bottles, every three hours, around the clock.

reteti elephant sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e ), in northern kenya is the first ever community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in africa. the sanctuary provides a safe place for injured elephants to heal and later, be returned back to the wild. reteti operates in partnership with conservation international (@conservationorg ) who provide critical operational support and work to scale the reteti community-centered model to create lasting impacts worldwide.

#repost from @robindmoore // “a zebra stands on a carpet of fresh grass against the deep blue hue of dusk in laikipia. as the last vestiges of light were being s****d from the sky, i bumped up my iso to capture some of my favorite images of zebra against a cobalt blanket of cloud.

Close encounters of the giraffe kind.
this moment was captured on my first visit to giraffe manor some eight years ago.

i have returned over half a dozen times since, drawn by the intoxicating mix of majestic wildlife, beautiful and warm people, and vast landscapes.
in addition to providing a safe haven for giraffes, the manor and adjoining giraffe center breed the endangered rothschild’s giraffe to expand the gene pool in the wild.
where else can you open your front door to be greeted by an endangered giraffe? i will be heading back to kenya to lead a photo safari with @thesafaricollection in march 2019... who wants to join me? #whyilovekenya

Lion tracking at the @loisaba_conservancy 📸 @silverless.
.
why visit laikipia?
.
1⃣ the different tribes in laikipia provide a perfect backstory for cultural tourism and community based conservation that is taking root in the region. masai, samburu, turkana, pokot, kikuyu, meru, tugen inhabit the land.
.
2⃣ a panoramic patchwork of tribal land, conservancies, sweeping cattle ranches and wildlife reserves, laikipia offers a heady mix of perspectives on conservation – and through the active participation of all parties, it works!
.
3⃣ one of the few areas in kenya still home to white and black rhino.

4⃣ a paradise for walkers and active travellers, from camping out in the wild (in relative comfort, of course!) to horse riding in big game country or running with the incredible maasai.
.
4⃣ unobstructed game corridors make the entire area one massive wilderness area and allow wild animals to follow their natural paths.
.
5⃣ laikipia is home to mount kenya, the second highest mountain after mount kilimanjaro and rising to 5,199 meters. although a couple of a hundred meters shy of kilimanjaro, the mountain is one of the toughest to ascend in the world and offers some of the best terrain for both amateur and professional mountaineers.
.
6⃣ whatever your budget laikipia's tourism offering will ensure you get value for money - camping, budget travel, home stay, self-catering, high-end travel - we have it all.
.
7⃣ the weather is very good all year round except for a few months of rain which is the best time for wildlife viewing.
.
8⃣ safari in laikipia is as it should be - wild, intimate, upclose and the region remains fairly untouched with large spaces to ensure that you are not crowded.
