Pullups are one of the best exercises to master in order to build upper body strength and a toned or muscular physique โžก๏ธhowever, the problem for many people is that they don't have the basic strength to lift their own body weight, so they opt for machine alternatives such as assisted pullups or lat pulldowns โžก๏ธ whilst these exercises can be a good place to start, they often do not translate into transferable strength gains for pullups as the incorrect movement pattern is trained. typically, pulldowns or assisted machine pullups are performed with the torso in a very upright position, which makes it hard to engage many of back and shoulder the muscles used during a pullup.

the exercise performed in the video shows the torso angled slightly under the bar, meaning more of the muscles used during a pullup are activated. you can change level of difficulty by using your legs more or less or having them straight out or raised on a platform in front of you.

back is a huge muscle group. to simplify things, you can essentially separate it into three main areas consisting of your lats, middle back, and lower back. these exercises are grouped with the area in which they are primarily intended to hit. however, most of these exercises will also hit other areas of your back as well. for example, dumbbell rows hit your lats but they will also hit your middle back. barbell rows will target your middle back but you will also be stimulating your lats. deadlifts definitely hit your entire back although your lower back does take on a larger role.

when setting up your routine, i recommend incorporating an equal amount of vertical pulling (such as pull-ups) and horizontal pulling (such as rows). the exact number of each per workout really depends on whether you’re on a full body routine, upper/lower split, or push/pull/legs.

do you ever put together a workout and think, yea, that part right there is going to be the most challenging?
today i looked at what i had to written out last night and was thinking, “why did i commit to 30 thrusters, whatever it’s one set, i won’t die.” โžก๏ธ swipe to last two photos for my warm up and workout today โžก๏ธ i got to my single straight leg deadlifts though and those suckers always get me, especially when i want to go fast. i can’t go fast if i want to really activate that posterior chain. i have to make a conscious effort to lengthen the hamstring, drive through my heel and make sure my hips stay square. then, on the way up engage the glute and drive the hip forward.
tip ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ you can do single straight legged deadlifts many different ways. one weight in hand on the side your are activating, or one weight in the opposite hand, weight on both sides (with two weights or a barbell), you can also do these with resistance bands or cables. they can even be challenging doing them body weight. and to really work on perfecting that form use a wall or a bench to steady yourself.

such a great movement for posterior glute/leg development - remember on this one slow and steady is the key ๐Ÿ”‘
