I put lipstick on like a child, my cat eye is literally one swift line because anything more complicated and i’ll just paint my whole eyelid black, and every time i try and have a serious face my bunny teeth pop out of my lips but i do have perfect nails because i hit up @basecoatnailsalon - mostly trash free, natural af, free of toxins, cruelty free and i don’t need to compromise my s**t to feel like a pretty princess. ๐ŸŒš๐Ÿ–ค๐ŸŒš #yayforearth

When i was a student, i'd fantazise about living on my own one day. i used to say "the day i know i've made it, will be when i can afford three things: my own dog, clothes from free people that aren't off the 'sale' rack, and fresh flowers from the farmers market every week." .....we all know i was off about the second one because fast fashion and i broke up a long time ago... but it wasn't until recently that i started to think about the ecological impact of buying flowers.

i wasn't too far off in my dream scenario considering i drempt of buying them locally and seasonally, but, as i continued to think about it... what's the impact growing/cutting/shipping/wrapping flowers? and why support that resource use every week?

did you know that most conventional roses are either grown in south america or africa? because i didn't until last mother's day.
did you know that one hectare of a conventional flower farm uses over 900m³ of water per month?
or that they're often sprayed with pesticides? potentially making "stopping to smell the roses" a chemical inhaling experience.
or that transporting flowers often requires refrigerated trucks? and when it comes to roses, for example, it's reported that ~100 million of them sold on a typical valentine’s day, produce around 9,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide in transport.

one of my fave solutions has become supporting a local florist who dries the flowers she couldn't sell. that way i'm preventing them from entering landfill (put all the resources required to grow them to waste), and i can enjoy them for a very long time. we bought these ones around 6 months ago and they're still going strong.

anyways... the takeaway from this scary post is:
1) your every day purchases have an impact. ask yourself if they're necessary, or can be obtained another way.
2) look for local flowers when possible, or wild flowers that could use a pick in your neighbourhood!
3) see if your local florist dries their unsold flowers, or dry your own!
4) look into secondhand silk or other faux flowers if possible
5) gift someone something else that won’t wither away quickly

what are your fave sustainable flower options?

Things i’ve realized - kansas motel super 8 edition: how can anyone take care of the earth when the system doesn’t actually allow us to? no one should be carrying around a bag of food scraps for almost a week waiting for a facility that cares, no one should have to skip meals because if they eat something they’ll throw up and feel like a poop all day or have to compromise their ethics. america, you’ve made it hard to want to care about the planet to an average american because i can barely take care of myself in places it should not be hard. i feel incredibly blessed to live in nyc, a place with options, opportunity and a way to sync up my beliefs and find easy ways to feel good. since i have this privilege i have the responsibility to continue to do my best to save our planet. this puts a fire under my belly to fight for everyone, change the system as well as maintain my power in all my actions. yes i’ve been wearing this space jam outfit for 3 days- no regrets. ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ€๐ŸŽฑ #yayforearth

Wearing wool as a vegan?

i refused to wear wool for a long time due to the industry’s cruel practices. unfortunately, the alternatives are mostly synthetic fibres, harmful to garment workers, the environment and my skin.
once i discovered this, i found myself in a big inner conflict.
now i wear wool but only secondhand: boycotting fast-fashion, any direct links to the commercial wool industry and reducing fashion waste (which would have further social, environmental and animal wellbeing conflicts). to some this might be “vegan hypocrisy” but for me this seems to have the smallest neg. environmental and social impact.
there are materials such as: hemp, cotton, bamboo.. and i opt for them, but they are a rare secondhand find - and that is my “fashion priority”. a complex issue, with complex arguments.
this is mine.
.
[ps: i don’t wear leather, even secondhand. i don’t want animal skin, chemically treated and often linked to child (&exploitative) labour on my skin. possibly hypocrisy, but it’s a complex topic ๐Ÿ™ƒ]

Zero waste anything is a little more difficult. it becomes second nature after a while, but anyone who tells you it’s “easy” isn’t telling the whole truth.
if it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

truth is, it’s not as convenient. but neither is a dying planet ๐Ÿ’‍โ™€๏ธ so recently when madison and i went camping i challenged us to produce as little waste as possible.

the first thing that came to mind? protein bars. they’re always wrapped in non- recyclable material and they are a campers/hikers life line.
here’s where convenience comes in. either buy a hand full of cliff bars at the store, or...
look up a recipe that only has ingredients you can find in bulk, find a place that has bulk, remember your bulk bags, take photos of the plus, read them back to the cashier, measure out the ingredients, bake the recipe, find something to store them in, and finally... wash the dishes.

so truthfully, it’s not always easy. but for me? it is always worth it.
i try to look on the bright side and there are plenty.
so hopefully all the negatives above didn’t scare you off โ˜€๏ธ i got to customize the recipe to my exact liking
โ˜€๏ธit was fun to make and kept us entertained for the night
โ˜€๏ธi kept it low waste and aligned with my values
โ˜€๏ธeverything tastes better when made with love

which would you choose?? honestly? handmade or store bought?

On my way to living more sustainable i am also making some changes at home. after some tips for an ecofriendly bathroom, i want to share some ideas for ecofriendly changes in the kitchen with you! ๐ŸŒฟโฃ
โฃ
two things are very important for me: what kind of food i eat and how i can buy/store/prepare/cook it in a sustainable way. โฃ
โฃ
๐ŸŒฑ studies have shown that switching to a plant based diet is the single biggest way to reduce your carbon footprint, so living vegan is really important to me. i also try to buy seasonal, local and organic food if possible. โฃ
โฃ
what you can also do:โฃ
๐Ÿฅ• try to avoid unnecessary packagingโฃ
โฃ
๐ŸŒฎ store your food correctly to avoid food wasteโฃ
โฃ
โ˜• replace “waste producers” with ecofriendly alternatives. for example you can use a coffee p*t instead of capsules or a tea infuser instead of tea bags. you can also switch to a wooden dish brush or a luffa sponge & use washable cloths instead of paper towels โฃ
โฃ
๐Ÿ› compost your organic food wasteโฃ
โฃ
this are just some ideas to get started ๐Ÿ˜Š which ecofriendly changes have you already done in the kitchen? โฃ

Large-scale systemic changes to the supply will only happen if the demand wills it. your impact matters! ๐Ÿ’š

how you can make a difference: ๐ŸŒฑ individually, start minimizing your carbon footprint along with plastic use. ๐ŸŒฑ be a conscious (and minimalist) consumer. ๐ŸŒฑ select organic products that don’t rely on insect killing chemicals. ๐ŸŒฑ choose beauty and food products free from rainforest devastating palm oil.

these are just a few ways. don't get discouraged if you don't do it all every day. everyone's journey is different and every step forward helps.

i took a walk in the recently harvested soya fields behind our farmhouse today and i discovered that random patches of soy plants had been left behind. i found myself admiring the colour and then realized that i could make my own soya milk to pretreat wooden beads in. i recently purchased @rebeccadesnos ebook called botanical dyes on wood and she suggests soaking wood in soya milk to achieve darker colours. while these soya beans are by no means organic, i will be making use of waste from the harvest instead of contributing to deforestation of the amazon rainforest.
any advice or easy recipes for soya milk would be greatly appreciated.

Why is it that i struggle to find black and brown faces?๐Ÿ‘€
...
when i started this #zerowaste and #minimalism journey 2 years ago it was so easy to see white faces on the journey- brown and black faces not so much. this movement had to be more inclusive than i was seeing on my little instagram world.
...
it was frustrating, sad, confusing, and i knew impossible. was instagram really telling me that black and brown faces were not on this journey, not advocates for their planet, not community organizers for sustainable communities? i’m happy to say the answer is a big f*t no!
...
black and brown faces do care and are on this journey. tag black and brown faces you think i should know on this journey and that others should know! sharing about others on this platform for the community i was desperately trying to find when i first started this journey will help connect this community of incredible black and brown faces.

๐Ÿฅ•a friendly reminder that, just like people, not all vegetables are perfect—and it’s what’s on the inside that really matters! ๐Ÿค“ often times at grocery stores and even farmers markets, only the “prettiest” looking produce gets put out for sale while the rest often gets trashed ๐Ÿ—‘. a small way you can help prevent this unnecessary food waste? buy that #uglyproduce ๐Ÿฅ•๐ŸŽ๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿ…๐ŸŒ! at farmers’ markets, you can even often get these #secondchoice goods at a discount๐Ÿ’ฐ. if you’re able to, you can also support companies like @misfitsmarket and @imperfectfoods who believe in saving more food โค๏ธ . in the end, everything is going to end up in my belly ๐Ÿ˜‹so what difference do these minor differences really make? ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป‍โ™€๏ธ plus, who doesn’t love stumbling upon a particularly funny shape ๐Ÿ˜‚

i feel that all beings, and especially humans, crave true connection.
we look for it in so many ways and forms. we seek happiness and bliss in material possessions, status or by telling impressive stories of the things we have done. yet when we open up our hearts, speak unfiltered and from our complete honest truth, we unlock the potential to see and be seen ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
when we find that true connection, a total understanding without judgement and all-seeing with another, there are hardly any words left to truly describe what it's really like ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ”…

La, let’s commit to #carfreestreets ๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿ’ซ๐ŸŒˆif major cities like san francisco, nyc, boston, and atlanta can turn busy and gridlocked corridors into thriving civic centers— then so can we.

redistricting these streets doesn’t mean we have to cut-off transportation entirely. there would be transit ๐ŸšŠ safer bike infrastructure ๐Ÿšฒ and more space to walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝ‍โ™€๏ธ in fact, these type of streets move more people per hour than streets we have today!
think of it as opening up l.a.’s streets, not closing them.

โ€จ. โ€จ.โ€จ#zerowaste #zerowastehome #zerowastejourney #zerowasteliving #giveawaywinner #lowwaste #lowwasteliving #wastefree #wastefreeliving #eco #ecofriendly #sustainability #sustainableliving #noplastic #plasticfreeliving #plasticfree #gogreen #greenliving #yayforearth #healtyliving #sustainablecollective #bathroominspiration #naturalbeautycare #solidsoap #shampoobar #soapbar #slowsoap #handmadesoap #bathroomtime #selfcaresunday

A sparkler on your ring finger might be pretty, but it’s fairly possible that it was acquired by s***e labor, underpaid workers, and in unsafe, life-threatening conditions.โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿ’โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
listen to this:โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿ‘‰ for every carat of diamond that is mined, nearly 100 sq ft of land is disturbed and almost 6000 lbs of mineral waste is created.โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿ‘‰ all in all, mined diamonds result in 1 injury for every 1,000 workers annually, while lab-grown diamonds result in zero.โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿ’โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
that’s the reason why i choose lab grown diamonds in my wedding ring. the concept was new to me until we started looking for rings. since not being a jewellery type of person, i knew very little about sustainable options in this field. โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
โœจโ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
so what is lab grown diamonds anyway? does it mean they are not real? no. lab-created diamonds are not fakes. they’re not cubic zirconias. they have all the same physical and chemical properties of a mined diamond. the only difference is that lab-created diamonds are grown inside a lab using cutting-edge technology that replicates the natural diamond’s growing process. this makes them 100% ethical, conflict free and sustainable. โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
๐Ÿ’โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
also, the gold in the ring is recycled. so much better for the environment and an act of love in so many ways. ๐Ÿ’•โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €

i took my daughter with me because she loves going to the bulk shop. you can spot at least three products she picked to buy ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ .
๐Ÿญ
this bulk haul cost me € 67 which i think is a fair price considering that all products are organic. most of the food will last up to three months. i didn't buy any legumes because i thought i still had plenty at home only to discover on my return that i had run out of chickpeas and beluga/black lentils...๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ never mind, i'll first use up all my pinto, kidney and black beans and red lentils before i go shopping again. .
๐ŸŒฑ
the almonds and chocolate strawberries are from a local supermarkt which has quite a nice variety of dried fruits and spiced nuts in bulk bins in the veggie section. i need to go there more often to show the demand for these plasticfree shopping opportunities - totally unselfish! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ needless to say that my daughter looooves these chocolate and gummy treats and that i should have bought more of them in her opinion...๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ ๐ŸŒฑ

Plastic free floss. this is a great alternative to normal floss as it naturally breaks down meaning it doesn't leave microplastics.
i have been using this for a few weeks and it works really well.

Menu plan + grocery list | it’s been a moment since i’ve shared my weekly plant-based, minimal waste eatage deets with the world ๐ŸŒพโ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿ“” but this week’s menu plan + grocery list was too good not to share! you want all the autumnal vibes? come and get them. you want nutritious dinner inspo? feast your eyes, you hangry individual.

you may remember i shared about my decision to start focusing more on eating locally and seasonally ๐ŸŒฝ it’s going really well! we’ve switched from doing the majority of our grocery shopping at sprouts (an affordable health food chain) to supporting our neighborhood co-op. but it is significantly (and justifiably) more expensive to eat locally grown, fair food, and our co-op pretty much only stocks organic produce, increasing our food budget even more.

so every once in a while, like today, we make the trip to sprouts to save about $20-$25. those aren’t pennies! one day when we’re making more than $30k a year combined (overshare? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ), we’ll be much better at living up to our values. for now, though, doing the bulk of our shopping at the co-op will have to do. we’re exceptionally privileged to be able to afford even that.

do you find yourself having to compromise your earth-friendly ethics due to budget? ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿค” and did you miss my menu plans?? ๐Ÿ˜…

Why am i wearing this summery outfit in october? because mother earth is experiencing a climate crisis! my jack-o-lanterns didn’t last 5 days because of the heat and humidity (they used to last all month!). now at least children don’t have to worry about wearing a long sleeve t-shirt under their costumes?

but really guys, take a look around your communities and other communities around the world. this weather is not normal. places are drying up while other places are flooding. exxon did a study 1982 that predicted how fossil fuels would impact our planet today with very accurate results. however, they spread denialism and covered up their report. they have known about fossil fuel pollution since the 1982!! so listen to scientists and people whose homes are disappearing because of the climate crisis. don’t listen to corporations (or politicians) who have alterior motives- corporations who knew exactly what fossil fuels would do to the planet and did nothing to stop it. it’s not normal when temperatures fluctuate 20 degrees everyday. open up your beautiful eyes and believe facts!! facts that exxon released in 1982

A wildly giant f**k you to exxon and their companies executives. oil and gas company exxon knew about climate change half a century ago, knew the repercussions, lied to the public, mislead their shareholders and robbed humanity an entire generations worth of time to reverse climate change. all for money. they are on trial as we speak for all of this in nyc because documents revealed they knew their movements would be a climate catastrophe and instead they funded climate denialism efforts and false research to confuse the facts to us - this needs to be talked about as this is one of the most important trials of our generation. thank you @thealmostphd for bringing this to light- spread the word everyone so we can hold more fossil fuel companies responsible, educate our community and finally change this system! ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒŽ#exxonknew #yayforearth

You know the thrifting is good when you need a basket ๐Ÿ›’
fast facts:
๐Ÿ‘–americans throw away a totally of 14 million tons of textiles a year.
๐Ÿ‘” it takes about 2,720 liters of water to produce one cotton shirt-equivalent to what an average person drinks over 3 years!
๐Ÿ‘Ÿapproximately 300 million people who produce cotton are still living in poverty.
i’m still in awe when learning more about the fashion industry because it’s a crazy beast of a problem. it intersects into waste, environmental issues, human rights, animals rights and probably a million other things i haven’t learned yet. it all boils down to waaaaay too much consumption. because of all this racket i have been turning into a thrifting queen ๐Ÿ‘‘ i have vowed to buy mostly used, avoid animal leather or wool, and if i do buy new, find a company i want to support. if you are privileged enough to, vote with your dollar ๐Ÿ’ธ

Use it, or lose it! no i’m not talking about coupons, perishable foods, or your fsa benefits - i’m talking about public transit!

mass transit suffers from the chicken & egg problem in so many ways:

1. when there is no transit, people have no choice but to drive, so investments pour into more and wider roads, leaving less funding and space to build new transit systems.

2. it’s hard to have a constituency to advocate for something nonexistent. so without an existing transit system, it’s hard to create wide support for it. but without public support, transit systems never get built.

3. when transit does exist, we need a critical mass of riders to sustain it. the less you ride the bus, the less frequently the bus is going to come, which makes you want to ride the bus even less.

ok, the last one is more of a downward spiral problem ๐Ÿ˜ณbut you get my point: if we want a robust mass transit system to reduce the emission, pollution, and congestion impact of driving, we have to demand it, build support for it, change our car-centric culture around it, use it, and pay for it.

the last one is so very crucial. public transit is up against cheap gas, easy financing terms for cars, and in many parts of the country underpriced parking, and free/extensive roads. to encourage ridership, fares are kept low, but this is partly why nearly all mass transit systems around the world lose money (hong kong’s mtr system is a well-known exception).
.
a 2015 brookings paper found that only a handful of america’s 1,800+ transit operations generated more fare revenue in 2013 than they paid in costs [1]. swipe for a visual on how many dollars each system loses per ride. you see, the fewer passengers, the harder it generally becomes for transit systems to succeed financially. and around the country, ridership is declining [2,3].
.
so, those of us who are fortunate enough to live in places with public transit, let’s use it and learn to love it! today on the blog, tips for a better - ok fine, “more tolerable” - public transit experience, link in bio!

does your town have mass transit? if so, do you use it, why and why not?

Wash those fruits & veggies ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿฅฌ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿฅ”๐ŸŒถ
so you know how the grocery store has those little thin plastic bags you tear-off and are meant to put your vegetables in? you don’t need them. just put your vegetables straight into the cart or your reusable shopping bags and checkout! the germs and nasties you may be afraid of touching your vegetables and fruit is already on them anyways (being touched as picked, chemicals added to preserve, etc.) so just throw them in the cart and always wash your vegetables and fruit once you get home. it’s honestly so simple and if you don’t buy from your farmers market where you know their practices (not using pesticides, etc.) then you should most definitely be washing that “food-grade/ edible synthetic wax” sh*t off your apples, bell peppers, squash, sweet potatoes... foods that already produce a natural waxy coating and only get re-waxed to extend their shelf lives— ew. ๐Ÿ™…‍โ™€๏ธ just because something is said to be edible, doesn’t mean it should be. synthetics are a no go you guys. ๐Ÿคฆ‍โ™€๏ธ nutritionist dr. anju sood, "the natural wax present in apples is easily digestible and does no harm to the body. on the other hand, wax coating is done to preserve apples for as long as they can. the wax used may not be easily absorbed by the body and can be harmful for the colon or the small intestine." ๐Ÿ˜ณ organically grown fruits and vegetables do not contain synthetic (petroleum-based) wax coatings (among other growth hormones/chemicals,) so shopping at your local farmers’ market will most often be unwaxed, untreated, and healthier.
.
vinegar degrades/removes waxy coatings. i’ll share this recipe i’ve shared before that i use to bathe my fruit and veg in!
_recipe__by @stacysullivan_
• 1 c. apple cider vinegar
• 1/2 c. water
• 1/2 c. lemon juice
just pour a 1/2 c.-1 c. in your sink to give them a nice bath or use this in a spray bottle & let them air-dry. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป done!

We’ve all been there... โ˜น๏ธ๐Ÿ… make a #changefornature like @polly.barks: that face you make when your tomatoes start to look a little less than fresh... i’m excited to be working in partnership with @burtsbees who will use their considerable platform to help protect nature for the next generation and beyond. unlike many other brands, it’s not by asking you to buy their products! instead, they want you to #changefornature and take a pledge for just over 2 months (the time it takes to form a habit) that will encourage intentionally proactive steps to protect the environment each and every day.

my pledge has to do with keeping this look off my face: “i pledge to reduce my fresh produce waste by creating simple, delicious meals that i share with my community.” less waste, happier face. and it’s pretty simple - but has a huge impact! about โ…“ of all the food created for human consumption is wasted. sadly, most of that unused food ends up in landfills where - because it doesn’t have oxygen - it doesn’t break down naturally. instead it releases methane (a ghg over 20x more potent than co2!). globally, food waste makes up about 8% of our total ghg emissions!

by cutting down our food waste, we reduce our carbon footprint and have an opportunity to honor the energy and resources it took to grow our food. plus, by creating large batches we can invite extra mouths over to help us deal with the extra food and we begin to connect with our community, taking an individual action beyond ourselves.

we’re at a critical point in history - it’s important now more than ever to protect nature. find joy in your connection with nature and your community by honoring the food you’ve bought with the people you like! you in? (uh, and any great scrappy sauce/soup recipes totally welcome in the comments!) #theboringrevolution #goingzerowaste #yayforearth #zerowasteliving

The earth is already 1°c hotter than it was 100 years ago [1]. this is the average increase across the whole world's surface, but the land is warming much faster than the ocean [1]. for example, in part of the puerto rican rainforest, the average daily maximum temperature has increased by 2°c since 1970 [18]! a few degrees may not sound like much, but it is already having surprisingly severe effects on humans and wildlife [10].
.
together with an increased average temperature, we are experiencing more frequent and severe heatwaves and storms: extremes are becoming more extreme [10,11], which is a major problem [12].
.
heatwaves are killing animals and people [13]. for example, extremely high temperatures during australian heatwaves have killed thousands of flying foxes [2]. even back in 2003, climate change is thought to have increased the chance of death from the heatwave in paris by 70% [14].
.
similarly, droughts have become more frequent and severe [6]. this is killing people [16], trees [7], and is contributing to the drying of farmland, which in some cases has become unsuitable for growing crops or grazing animals due to climate change [15].
.
another well-known effect of climate change is sea level rise [4]. since 1900, the sea levels have increased by 20cm [4]. this may sound insignificant, but in some places it is already causing serious problems [17]. the state of louisiana, in the usa, has lost nearly 5000 square kilometres of coastal land area since 1932 due to sea level rise [5]. many people are already having to relocate due to sea level rise, such as in coastal villages in fiji [17].
.
to find out how scientists predict the earth will respond to 1.5°c, 2°c and 4°c of global warming, look out for our next few posts.
.

Greta thunberg visited canada this past week and gave her standard climate speech to a crowd of approx 10,000 people in edmonton.โฃโฃ
โฃ โฃโฃ
what i saw from many in the online community was a position of defence - what does a 12 year old know, she’s in oil country now, she has no realistic answers, how did she transport herself here?โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
if you listen to her speech, she does not disrespect the local economy, nor is the goal of the speech to provide solutions to canada. she wants people to talk, to become aware of the subject, listen to the science… and come up with our own plan. โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
how many people that have commented on greta’s activism have actually read the ipcc report she quoted, or more likely the summary? browsed the website? โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
canada emits a fraction of the worlds emissions...but per capita we rank one of the highest emitters. i can give you a hundred other angles like this but at the end of the day mother nature doesn’t give a s**t about our finger pointing. โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
if nothing changes we will all be impacted, so let’s take the opportunity while we can to position canada as a leader and innovate, design, and create solutions.โฃโฃ
