What is the connection between omega-3 fats and mood? ⠀

you may have heard of this kind of f*t before, it may even be promoted on the packages of foods you buy. something important to know about these particular fats is that our body cannot make them on our own so we must get them from our food supply. ⠀

omega-3 fats have many important functions in the body but research is showing a connection between these fats and a reduction in symptoms of depression and positive outcomes in other mental illnesses. ⠀

interestingly, the omega-3 fats that have this particular function are quite scarce in the food supply so it is tricky to get enough in your diet. ⠀

registered dietitian is a regulated health professional just like doctors and nurses. recently, the title 'nutritionist' became protected as well in alberta. that means that anyone who is calling themselves a nutritionist is also registered dietitian. ⠀

this is actually an important fact to know about us because it really is for the best interest of the public. we are required to offer our services in a particular way that will be in your best interest. that means, staying up-to-date on the most current research out there. as you know, in the area of health, things are constantly changing but it is our job to interpret this for you! ⠀

this is important information for you to know if you are trying to select someone to work with on your health journey. not everyone out there has the same skills/knowledge and is regulated. ⠀

canadians are more susceptible to vitamin d deficiency during the winter months due to decreased daylight hours and altered uv exposure. ⠀⠀
vitamin d is important for a number of functions in our body and many canadians are already deficient due to our geographical location and low prevalence in the food supply. ⠀⠀

vitamin d deficiency has been linked with low bone density, impaired cognitive function, and some mental illnesses. ⠀⠀
many are aware that our body has a built-in system to make this vitamin when our skin is exposed to sunlight. it is also important to be aware that darker skin, windows, and clothing will block this process. ⠀⠀

for most people, we recommend taking a supplement of 2000 iu vitamin d (with food) for optimal absorption. the best food sources are fatty fish like mackerel, tuna, and salmon although, getting enough of this particular nutrient solely through food is extremely challenging. ⠀
