I will admit i'm a lover of a stylish, carefully planned zero waste image. i’m sure to double-tap when a snap like above or a stunning pantry with whole foods stacked perfectly in glass jars or stainless steel, glass & wood products perfectly paired appear on my feed. but i also know that zero waste doesn’t really look like that majority of the time.
i can take a pretty snap of my pantry essentials once i’ve been on a haul at the bulk food store. but then they get shoved in my pantry, which is not some kind of oasis, but more an assortment of mis-matched jars with mis-matched lids and several plastic containers from before my zero waste journey. the kind that won’t be gracing the front cover of magazines ever.
so in reality - zero waste is a lot more jumbled and mis-matched and imperfect in real life. at least, it is for me. but a scroll through your social media feed suggests (most of the time) that zero waste is perfect jars, in perfect white homes with perfect accessories, which may begin to set unrealistic expectations. it may plant the idea that you need 'better' things to fit into the lifestyle. but it's not about consuming more, it's totally the opposite. it's reducing your footprint, working with what you already have, consuming less, and when you do consume - consume consciously and make the best choices you can with the
resources and options you have availiable to you at that time.
remember image is secondary to this. though i believe sharing these pictures brings awareness, attracts attention and starts the conversation and we would be doing zero waste injustice not to share. but maybe some balance here and more of the less perfect bits and the no way near perfect images that are the reality of what zero waste looks like is what zero waste needs 💁♀️.

Most glitter is made from plastic, so when this gets washed down the drain it enters the sea and becomes part of the growing problem of microplastics which are consumed by sea life and cause a lot of problems. microplastics can even make their way up the food chain and end up on your plate if you’re eating fish. a lot of festivals recently have started banning their attendees from wearing glitter, which is amazing ! even @lush has started to replace glitter in their products with biodegradable glitter.
