There are only two legitimate reasons to hit the gym hard:
1). b**w dryer arms
2). that second slice of pizza

I’ve been kinda sorta taking a semi-break from the grams lately; slowing down, spending my days in prayer and pondering, hiking and reading good books with my kiddos. it's been good for my soul, but i do miss you all.
so while i'm not quite ready to be fully back, here's something i've had on my heart (maybe it will resonate with you too) ๐Ÿ’›
to love at all is to be vulnerable.
love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken.
if you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal.
wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness.
but in that casket — safe, dark, motionless, airless — it will change.
it will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.
the alternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. the only place outside of heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is hell.” {c. s. lewis}

It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting,
for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart.
sorrow is better than laughter, for by sadness of face the heart is made glad.
the heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
it is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools.

He sees by faith an unseen savior, who loved him, gave himself for him,
paid his debts for him, bore his sins, carried his transgressions,
rose again for him, and
appears in heaven for him as his advocate at the right hand of god. ๐Ÿ’›
he sees jesus — and clings to him. seeing this savior and trusting in him — he feels peace and hope and willingly does battle against the foes of his soul.
๐Ÿ’›
he sees his own many sins, his own weak heart, a tempting world,
a busy devil —
and if he looked only at them, he might well despair. ๐Ÿ’›
but he sees also a mighty savior, an interceding savior, a sympathizing savior — his blood, his righteousness, his everlasting priesthood — and he believes that all this is his own. he sees jesus — and casts his whole weight on him. seeing him, he cheerfully fights on, with a full confidence that he will prove more than conqueror through him that loved him.
๐Ÿ’›
let there be no mistake in your mind as to the special character of the man who has come to christ, and is a true christian. he is not an angel, he is not a half-angelic being, in whom is no weakness, or blemish, or infirmity - he is nothing of the kind. he is nothing more than a sinner who has found out his sinfulness, and has learned the blessed secret of living by faith in christ. ๐Ÿ’›
what was the glorious company of the apostles and prophets? what was the noble army of martyrs? what were isaiah, daniel, peter, paul, polycarp, augustine, luther, bunyan...? what were they all, but sinners who knew and felt their sins, and trusted only in christ? what were they, but men who accepted the invitation i bring you this day, and came to christ by faith? by this faith they lived; in this faith they died. in themselves and their doings they saw nothing worth mentioning; but in christ they saw all that their souls required. ๐Ÿ’›
the invitation of christ is now before you. if you never listened to it before, listen to it today. broad, full, free, wide, simple, tender, kind, that invitation will leave you without excuse if you refuse to accept it. there is one invitation ought always to be accepted: the one before you today. jesus christ is saying, “come unto me"-jcryle #theologythursdays๐Ÿ“–

Remember when @instagram was 90% photos of what we are for lunch? those were good, simpler times, weren't they?
and speaking of good times, the hubs took me to king taco for lunch today ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒฎ #mylovelanguage
so tell me, if you could it eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
for sure, no contest, mine would be carne asada street tacos. but i'd probably miss burgers and pizza occasionally. how about you?

Occasionally, weep deeply over the life that you hoped would be. grieve the losses. feel the pain. then wash your face, trust god, and embrace the life that he’s given you.

p.s. this tree takes my breath away every autumn when she shows off all her blooms ๐Ÿ™Œ but also i am reminded, as @gracelaced says, we don't always need to be blooming to be growing. there can be visible barrenness, a desert surrounding us, but god is still at work. the future may look bleak, we may feel stuck, but god is still at work. our growth may be hidden deep inside right now, perhaps imperceptible even to ourselves, but god is still at work. not every season of growth is beautiful or flashy or full of blooms. and knowing that encourages me to keep on fighting, to keep on hoping for spring.

There may be much weakness & infirmity even in a true christian. you have a striking proof of this in the conduct of the disciples when the waves broke over the ship. they said to jesus, in fear & anxiety, “master, carest thou not that we perish?” ๐Ÿ’™
poor faithless men! they had seen such proof that all must be well so long as christ was with them. but all was forgotten in the present danger. sense of immediate peril often makes men have a bad memory. fear is often unable to reason from past experience. ๐Ÿ’™
but this is a picture of what is constantly going on among believers in every age. many of god’s children get on very well so long as they have no trials. they fancy they are trusting him entirely, having cast every care on him. ๐Ÿ’™
but suddenly some trial assails them. where now is their faith? fear, doubt, distress & anxiety break in like a flood.
the plain truth is that a man may have true saving faith & yet not have it always close at hand & ready to be used. ๐Ÿ’™
it is easy for you to reply, “they had jesus with them. i should never have been so cowardly & faithless!” i tell the man who argues this that he knows little of his own heart. no one knows the depth of his own infirmities or can say how much weakness might appear in himself.
๐Ÿ’™
be not high-minded, but fear. you do not know yourself thoroughly. blessed is he that is clothed with humility. happy is he that fears always. let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
๐Ÿ’™
i want christians to understand what they must expect to find in themselves, to prevent their being puzzled by the discovery of their own weakness & infirmity. i want them to see that they may have true faith & grace, in spite of the devil’s whispers to the contrary. so long as they are in the body they must not expect faith to be above the reach of fear.
๐Ÿ’™
the apostles believed in, loved, & gave up all to follow christ. yet you see in the storm the apostles were afraid. learn to be moderate in your expectations of your own heart. allow that a man may be converted, have a new heart, be a holy man, & yet be liable to infirmity, doubts & fears.
๐Ÿ’™
happy #theologythursdays๐Ÿ“–!

Lord, high and holy, meek and lowly,
thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,
where i live in the depths but see thee in the heights;
hemmed in by mountains of sin i behold thy glory.
let me learn by paradox that the way down is the way up,
that to be low is to be high,
that the broken heart is the healed heart,
that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,
that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,
that to have nothing is to possess all,
that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,
that to give is to receive,
that the valley is the place of vision.
lord, in the daytime stars can be seen from deepest wells,
and the deeper the wells the brighter thy stars shine;
let me find thy light in my darkness,
thy life in my death,
thy joy in my sorrow,
thy grace in my sin,
thy riches in my poverty,
thy glory in my valley.

We hiked down to a waterfall and found autumn instead ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ
the weather was hot and the trail was brutal at times, but all in all, the yellow of the leaves and the memories built made it worth the struggle ๐Ÿ’ช
